Sweat 2024: Going Deeper

If you haven’t heard, we are a yoga studio, and when most people think of a yoga studio, they think of bending and balancing and contortions, all of which is correct – and, also, incorrect.

Let me explain: in the infancy of my life as a yogi, when I first came to Sweat as a student six or seven years ago, I found myself gutting out a right-sided half-pigeon in the second row from the front, three spots from the window; I was perspiring, barely breathing, and squeezing the micro muscles around my eyes shut when the instructor said, “Sometimes, I don’t feel like I’m just doing yoga, but that I’m actually being yoga.”

And I had no clue what that meant.

But in spite of my ignorance, I thought it was one of the most beautiful things I’d ever heard.

This concept of “being yoga” was new to me, but it wasn’t new to the world, and as I’d eventually learn, what I was doing on my mat that day was only a fraction of the greater whole – mathematically speaking, about 12.5%.

You see, per Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras – a 2500 year old text laying out the theory and “how-to” of the practice – yoga is an eight-limbed discipline, with the physical asanas only being one of them; the other seven limbs include ethical and moral codes, breathing practices, sense withdrawal, concentration, meditation, and the ultimate goal, samadhi, or liberation.

So, yes: when you spend sixty minutes in class, you are doing yoga.

But, technically, yoga isn’t a place you go or something you do; rather, it’s a way of being in the world, which comes to include the other 23 hours of the day.

Yoga is deeper than the physical movement, and this year at Sweat, we’re going deeper, too.

Specifically, “going deeper” means a focus on programs and workshops that extend beyond what we might be able to cover in an hour – sometimes, even extending beyond what most people think of as “yoga” in the first place. Here, we’ll provide more intimate environments and immersive experiences for practitioners to learn and grow within specific techniques and practices, taking this from the mat to…well, everywhere else.

As a point of clarity, programs will run in six-week intervals, meeting either on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, but always at 6 PM. Each program will align with a similar class on the schedule, so even after the conclusion of the six weeks, practitioners can keep the habit and continue to implement their learning. For example, TRX Beginner’s Mindset with Callie will meet on Mondays at 6 PM in the Align Room; however, there is TRX Yoga every Monday at the same time with Krystal in the Activate Room, so even though the program may end, the opportunity to keep the practice and routine going will remain available.

Workshops, on the other hand, will be Saturday, Sunday, or full weekend deep dives into specific topics – for instance, Arm Balances – which will provide information and experience enough to bring with you for the weeks and months to come. Some of these may be one-offs, but others will funnel into their own six-week programs, as is the case with Arm Balances. The same is true of some of certain specialty classes, including Serenity Sessions and Moon Phase Flows.

This may sound like a lot, but here’s what you need to know: there are so many opportunities to dive into the things that interest and excite you this year. You will have all the chances to do and grow and be, and for the first two months of 2024, here’s what’s on the menu…
